Pet odors on rugs and furniture are usually from where your dog or cat walk and lie down in. Their oil and dander stick to carpet and upholstery, which then attracts dirt, giving the area an unclean pet odor which is not necessarily from urine or feces.
If your carpet and upholstery have are regularly cleaned and have not been neglected, it is much easier to remove pet odors. But remember that if your pet has been lying in the same spot for months or years without regular cleaning, it is almost impossible to remove the petty smells in those areas. Which is even more of a reason to get your rugs and upholstered furniture cleaned regularly!
Because of the acid content in these types of stains, carpet or upholstery may be permanently damaged. Also, soap and detergents like "Resolve" and "Nature's Miracle" have a high alkaline pH which can turn the carpet or upholstery yellow over time and leave a lot of residue behind that attracts dirt and odors.
At Delaware Valley Carpet Cleaning, I use an All Natural mint plant extract for these types of spots and odors. While it normally takes up to 5 years for most organic odors like urine to break down naturally, the plant extract I use breaks it down in over a 1 to 2 week timeframe. The odor is often worse the first day it's cleaned, but gets better over time. If the odor persists, I offer to retreat those areas at no charge, but it is hard to guarantee the removal of all odors from carpet and fabric. Each job I do is individually evaluated and the appropriate expectations for the ending results are given to the client before cleaning starts, to ensure clarity and clear communication as well as realistic expectations.
What's that musty smell? If you smell lingering odors or an underlying musty aroma, it's time to get your carpet, upholstered furniture and fabric-covered surfaces cleaned. Musty odors are early indicators that dust, mold, and bacteria are lurking in hidden places. Cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing your carpet and upholstered furniture can help resolve musty odors.
While cleaning and deodorizing carpets and upholstery "can" reduce other odors such as cigarette smoke and fire damage odors, it is best to contact a restoration company for those types of stubborn odors.
